The Role of a Guardian ad Litem
A guardian ad litem is appointed by the court, not hired by any party. The GAL learns the facts by speaking with the people involved, such as parents, children, family members, teachers, and counselors, and by reviewing relevant records. The GAL then advocates for the outcome that best serves the person the GAL was appointed to protect, and may make recommendations to the parties and to the court.

In probate court, the GAL represents the interests of a minor or of a person who may be unable to protect his or her own interests.
